Communicating both surprise and disbelief, this non-standard punctuation mark is the perfect namesake for independent bookseller Interabang Books. The death of printed materials has long been forecast and new to market indy, Interabang Books, aimed to continue to prove these reports exaggerated by offering a wide, curated selection of reading materials, a great environment, and a staff of knowledgable and enthusiastic booksellers. By leading with personality, Interabang Books seeks to be a guide to the excitement and wonder that reading brings and was in need of a similarly fun and captivating visual identity system.

Our directives were to create a system which was fun, engaging, a bit Bauhaus, and would integrate perfectly with the contemporary, Scandinavian inspired space GFF Architecture was in the process of building out.
Starting with a color palette of vibrant primary colors, we established a lock up consisting of a period extended typeface flanking a solid color bar meant to reflect, in totality, an abstracted stack of books. The interabang makes an appearance as both a stand alone icon and as a component in the combination mark. We emphasized the spirit of play in supporting materials with loud, repeating typography and quirky visual devices like the rebus.

The store’s home on the web is similarly focused on fun with floods of color and the Interabang Books logo in the masthead doubling as a search bar. Developed on Drupal, the site is fully mobile responsive and integrates with the American Bookseller’s Association IndieCommerce database and tools. Visit Interabang Books.
